Florida is perfect with its location and privileged climate to be a preferred destination for golfers. This peninsula is a great setting for sunrise and sunset, depending on your location, and has a great variety of flora and fauna that adds value to the landmarks of the golf courses.
The Sunshine State has so many beaches that provide fantastic views from the greens for an amazing round of golf, and has over 1,250 golf courses to choose from. Some of the courses are private, but many are open to the public.
Seminole – North of West Palm Beach
This course is crowned as the best you can find in Florida, rated #17th in the USA, and 31st in the Top Courses of the world. Facing the Atlantic coastlines, this marvelous location provides a breathtaking view of the daily sunrise. You need to be a member or friend of one to be able to play here. Originally designed by Donald Ross, it is considered as a prime example of golf course routing. Dick Wilson restored this course to its original magnificence. It’s clubhouse and locker rooms are something to admire.
TPC at Sawgrass (Stadium) – Ponte Vedra Beach
Considered 2nd best in Florida, rated #33 in the USA, and 66th in the Top Courses of the world. Masterfully designed by Pete Dye, this course will test you with its many challenging holes, such as the 11th and 17th with its raised green. TPC Sawgrass was built considering both the pros and the fans, and making sure not to favour anyone or any kind of play or style. The Players Championship is held annually in May, and is part of the PGA Tour. The 17th island green is a signature hole, and is something to remember and cherish for many years, as it’s also widely recognized around the world. In 2007 the course was upgraded with state of the art drainage improvements, tees, fairways and greens, to ensure all playing surfaces continue firm and fast at all times. It is a course that’s always exciting to play, as it is never the same how you approach each shot, as it’s affected by the changing wind.
Calusa Pines – Naples
Still within the Top 100 courses in the USA, Calusa is ranked #75. A private club, where you can play only if you’re a member or befriend one. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed this superb course, with deep lakes, elevation changes, sand and waste bunkers connecting the playing surfaces to the water hazards. Making it all look like it was a natural design of the landmark. The wind was also considered while designing this course, to make sure it affects your game, depending on the direction, and the location of the trees. A versatile 18 hole course that will make you use all your clubs to adjust to the different set ups, lengths, elevations, etc. Every hole is different, so you will have to take decisions as to where to hit it from, how strong, and which club to use. They showcase native flora masterfully placed to enhance the layout and view of the course, and is set in a secluded area to ensure a tranquil round, not interrupted by external noises, or other distractions.
Streamsong (Red) – Streamsong
Ranked as #77 in the USA, this course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw to stamp their signature mark in this amazing landscape. Considered the 12th Best Resort Course in 2015 by Golfweek.com on November 2014. Located an hour southeast of Tampa, here you’ll find this amazing course. Streamsong includes huge sand dunes, man-made lakes and amazing views, surrounded by natural wildlife to top of your round of golf. This 18-hole course showcases many water hazards to be aware off while you play, and was awarded 2014 Trip Advisor Circle of Excellence. The course’s isolation provides privacy and relaxation so there are no distractions to take away from your golfing experience. Measuring almost 7200 yards, this is a more open course than its counterpart Blue Course, and has more landing areas.
Both courses are laid out in an extensive area, taking advantage of what 50 years since the mining operation shut down, had done to the land. New lakes were formed; new habitats were created to allow wildlife to call this area their home. The clubhouse and golf shop are an amazing addition to your golfing experience. Ranked the 14th Best Resort Course in 2015 by Golfweek.com on November 2014. Designed by Tom Doak, it has his print with the shaping of natural landforms. The isolation of this resort will let you enjoy the sky filled with stars, amazing sunrises and sunsets, and a complete peace, as nothing else will distract you. A must to consider if you’re around, as you can choose to play both Red and Blue to enjoy two superb courses in one place. Both courses, Red and Blue intertwine and let you enjoy your game and the fantastic views at the same time.
