The youth of England have been congregating at Glastonbury Festival each summer for decades. First inaugurated in 1970, the Somerset gathering attracts famous musical acts from around the world.
As a part of the open-air free festival movement of the ‘70s, contemporary artists such as David Bowie, The Smiths, Elvis Costello, and Oasis have all notoriously performed at Glastonbury.
The festival begins on June 22, 2016 and runs for five days. The grounds are located on Worthy Farm in the country surrounding Pilton, Somerset, which is just south of Bristol. To reach it, simply drive south on A37 from Bristol, turning west on A361 until you reach Pilton.
Accommodations at Glastonbury Festival are limited to camping, but at Worthy View, the experience is worthwhile. You have the option of booking a bright, colorful tent that will be pre-erected and awaiting your arrival. The other benefit of booking at Worthy View is the easy access between the campsite and festival grounds. Parking is included, too! Other more traditional campsites are located nearby, as well, if you’re up for a back-to-basics experience.
Glastonbury is unique in it’s variety of arts and entertainment. All across the grounds, it’s possible to happen across a new stage, gathering, or art installment. Each section of the festival has its own flair, such as Silver Hayes, Green Fields, Circus & Theatre, and The Park. Die-hard festival goers typically find their favorite nook and stick to it, but it’s suggested that newcomers comb the entire scene to get acquainted. Something new is around every corner!
Another important aspect of the festival is its consistent commitment to eco-friendly practices. Glastonbury has worked with Oxfam, Greenpeace, and WaterAid as long term partners. The organizations typically provide volunteers to help run the show, while proceeds from ticket sales are donated back into the companies.
This year marks the 45th installment of Glastonbury Festival. To commemorate the occasion, cherished musicians like Adele, Coldplay, Earth Wind and Fire, and LCD Soundsystem will headline the main stages. You definitely don’t want to miss out on this iconic slice of British summer fun!
